Manifest Destiny Slide Show
Go to this link! http://bit.ly/SlidesManifest
HERE ARE SOME NOTES for you as you watch the slides.
For the first map: This is a map from 1872, after the Civil War and after all the states along the borders had been established.
The Second map (1816): This is some map taken from a textbook - the purpose for this slide show is NOT to show you the results of the 1816 election, but to show that the US border had been expanded westward into "Missouri Territory." There were relatively few Anglo-Americans living West of the Mississippi- (you should recognize the Mississippi River on the map!)
When you click to the next slide, you should see the Title - 1816 Map by John Melish.
Click again, and you'll see a map slide into place that shows the Eastern "half" of PRESENT day United States.
Click once more, and the "other half" of Melish's map appears. This is the WHOLE of his map. You can see that he indicates that to the South, there are some Mexican states, which he outlined in blue and orange. The border with Canada bulges upward.
The last slide is a quote from Melish.
Close the show and work on the handout!
