World War II - 1941-1945
The war disrupted the homes, families. and lives of all Americans. Many women followed their husbands to military bases. Both men and women went in search of of high-paying jobs in the defense industry. Many African Americans traveled north ane west hoping to escape poverty and discrimination.
This mingling of people from different backgrounds altered the way Americans looked at themselves. The American people began to recognize some of the political, social, and economic consequences of living in such a diverse society. The prosperity that Americans experienced from a full-employment economy during the war years enabled them to live better after the war. American Odyssey, p 522
